The primary aim of the conference is to familiarize the participants with the concept of palliative medicine and its significant role in the care of the terminally ill. Many people, including members of the patients' families and – unfortunately - even doctors and nurses, lack sufficient knowledge on what the specific target group of this kind of treatment is and what sort of problems and challenges it involves.
The organisers hope that the conference will contribute to the better understanding of its subject matter, as well as stimulate reflection and discussion on this field of medical care.
"We believe that the conference will result in an increased number of hospice volunteers and greater public awareness of the problems faced by the terminally ill. We would like to encourage earlier registration of patients who are in urgent need of hospice care, promote the idea of palliative care, and spread knowledge in this area.
The opening of the conference will take place on 9 June at 8.30 a.m. in the JU Auditorium Maximum. The event is held under the honorary auspices of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wojciech Nowak.
The Society of Friends to People in Disease at St. Lazarus Hospice was established in 1981. The construction of the hospice building was completed during the years 1990-96, thanks to the generosity of members and friends of the Society. The hospice offers high quality palliative care and home care, and is supported by a palliative out-patient clinic, and a lymphoedema out-patient clinic. Besides, it provides support for the patients' families during the time of illness and mourning.
